Military leaders and defense experts from across Africa, Europe, and the United States have gathered in Accra for the 13th African Land Forces Summit (ALFS), a pivotal event aimed at enhancing land force capabilities to tackle emerging security challenges.
The four-day summit, under the theme “Optimising Land Forces for the Emerging Environment,” is co-hosted by Ghana and the United States Army, drawing over 50 countries and a range of high-ranking military figures.
At the official opening, Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, stressed the growing need for multinational cooperation to address the complex and evolving security landscape facing many nations today. He highlighted that recent global security dynamics have made such collaborations increasingly essential.
“This summit provides a timely opportunity for land forces to develop innovative strategies and adapt to the rapidly changing security threats that affect our nations,” Dr. Omane Boamah remarked, underscoring the importance of global defense partnerships in tackling shared challenges.
The summit’s discussions are set to be driven by practical demonstrations and expert-led sessions that focus on addressing security challenges, such as insurgency, terrorism, and peacekeeping operations, which are significant concerns across the African continent. Major General William Kwaku Gbetanu, Chief of Army Staff, emphasized that this summit offers a unique space for military leaders from over 50 countries to engage in collaborative dialogue, with the goal of developing solutions for both current and future security threats.
“Relationships formed here are more than just discussions. They are the foundation for ongoing cooperation and collective success,” Major General Gbetanu added, stressing the long-term benefits of the summit beyond the event itself.
The ALFS is recognized as an invaluable platform for fostering strong defense partnerships and enhancing operational synergy between African, American, and European forces. With sessions tailored for high-level officials, as well as informal gatherings, the event encourages deeper engagement, knowledge sharing, and collaborative problem-solving among participating nations.
Major General Andrew C. Gainey, Commanding General of the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force – Africa, reaffirmed the summit’s strategic importance, stating, “We remain committed to collaborating with our African partners and allies. This summit is another step towards fostering peace and security in the region.”
Through its comprehensive approach to military cooperation, the African Land Forces Summit continues to play a crucial role in addressing the complex security challenges of the modern world, promoting peace, and building lasting partnerships across borders. The event serves as a critical platform for advancing global defense collaboration in a rapidly changing environment.
