Ghana’s para-athletics team has earned three qualification places for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, strengthening the country’s growing presence in international para-sports.
According to the National Paralympic Committee (NPC)–Ghana, the qualification was achieved through a combination of direct rankings and bipartite allocations, reflecting strong individual performances by Ghanaian athletes on the international stage.
Hayford Addai secured his place in the Men’s 100m T47 event after recording a time of 11.09 seconds, which placed him sixth on the Commonwealth rankings.
In the field events, Zinabu Issah booked qualification in the Women’s Shot Put F57 category with a throw of 8.66 metres, earning a fourth-place ranking.
Veteran para-athlete Bostyo Nkegbe, a three-time Paralympian, also earned a bipartite slot, completing Ghana’s trio of qualified para-athletics competitors.
The achievement raises Ghana’s total para-sports qualification slots for the Games to five, following earlier entries in para swimming and para powerlifting.
The NPC-Ghana says preparations will be intensified in collaboration with the Ghana Olympic Committee, with athletes expected to participate in international competitions under the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) calendar to improve performance ahead of the Games.
NPC-Ghana President Mr Samson Deen described the milestone as a reflection of growing commitment and resilience within the para-sports community, commending athletes, coaches, and support staff for their efforts.
He also appealed for increased support from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and other stakeholders, particularly in training resources and international exposure, to enhance Ghana’s competitiveness and medal prospects in Glasgow.
