The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has signaled renewed plans to introduce Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the Ghana Premier League (GPL), following the announcement of a new broadcast partnership with Adesa Production Limited (APL).
Alex Kotei, Referees Manager at the GFA, explained that the league had previously been unable to implement VAR due to broadcasting limitations. Speaking to Akoma FM, he emphasized that high-quality production is essential for the technology to function effectively.
“With VAR, the accuracy of the broadcast is critical,” Kotei said. “The past limitations in broadcasting prevented us from deploying it. With Adesa Production on board, we can now evaluate its feasibility in upcoming matches.”
The 2025/2026 GPL season is scheduled to kick off on September 12, and fans may see VAR used for the first time, pending successful trials with the new broadcast setup.
GFA officials believe the move could enhance officiating standards and transparency, aligning Ghana’s top-flight football with global best practices.
