In a solemn national address from the Jubilee House, President John Dramani Mahama unveiled a comprehensive plan of national mourning, reflection, and tribute to honour the eight public servants who tragically lost their lives in a military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region on August 6.
Framing the tragedy as a moment for national unity and healing, the President said the nation must come together not just to mourn, but to celebrate the sacrifice and service of those lost.
“These fallen heroes gave their lives in service to the nation,” President Mahama declared. “We must honour their legacy with the dignity and respect they deserve.”
The tribute will culminate in a state funeral on Friday, August 15, to be held at Black Star Square in Accra. Prior to that, an Evening of Reflection and Memorial will take place at the forecourt of the State House on Saturday, August 9, starting at 5 p.m., bringing together leaders from all walks of life in a collective moment of remembrance.
In a symbolic move to extend the public’s participation in mourning, Books of Condolence will be opened across key institutions beginning Sunday, August 10, through Thursday, August 14. These will be available at:
Ministry of Defence
Ministry of Environment
Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Ghana Armed Forces Headquarters
National Democratic Congress (NDC) Headquarters
NADMO Head Office
The victims included top cabinet ministers and military officers such as Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna. They were reportedly on official duty when their Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter went down near Adansi Akrofuom.
The president’s announcement has already prompted an outpouring of support from political parties, civil society organisations, and ordinary citizens — a signal that in the face of tragedy, the country can draw on a deep well of solidarity.
“Let this be a time not just of grief, but of unity and reflection,” President Mahama said, calling on Ghanaians to use this moment to recommit themselves to the ideals of public service and national cohesion.
