A Ghanaian-founded fintech company is making significant strides in the global financial space after securing regulatory approval in North America, a move expected to boost cross-border payments between Africa and the rest of the world.
WeWire has been registered as a Payment Service Provider under the Bank of Canada, following approval under Canada’s Retail Payment Activities Act. The milestone positions the company within one of the world’s most tightly regulated financial systems, opening new opportunities for international operations.
The company, led by Chief Executive Officer Ebenezer Ghanney and Chief Technology Officer Desmond Nyamador, is focused on simplifying global money transfers for businesses and individuals.
According to Mr. Ghanney, the approval reflects the ability of African startups to meet global compliance standards while competing on an international scale. He explained that the new status would allow WeWire to operate more directly within financial systems, reducing reliance on intermediaries that often slow transactions and increase costs.
The development is expected to improve transaction speed, security, and transparency for businesses operating across borders, particularly those engaged in trade between Africa and North America.
Mr. Nyamador noted that the achievement builds on the company’s growing global recognition, including its recent listing in the USDT Ecosystem Directory by Tether, placing it among firms advancing digital finance and stablecoin adoption.
With over $3 billion in transactions processed for more than 3,000 businesses across 80 countries, WeWire is positioning itself as a key player in the evolving fintech landscape. The company aims to strengthen financial connectivity for emerging markets, enabling businesses to scale internationally with faster and more efficient payment solutions.
