A Ghanaian pilgrim, Hajia Yussif Hawabu, has passed away while performing Hajj in the holy city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia, highlighting the inherent physical demands of the sacred pilgrimage.
The 63-year-old, a native of Tamale, reportedly collapsed while performing Tawaf, the ritual act of circling the Kaaba, at the Masjid Al-Haram (Grand Mosque) on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
Ismaila Skones, the Administrator of the Hajj Task Force of Ghana, confirmed the tragic incident, emphasizing that the late Hajia Hawabu was part of the contingent of 6,000 Ghanaian pilgrims currently undertaking the annual pilgrimage.
Following Islamic tradition, the deceased was buried in Makkah shortly after her passing, ensuring she received the honor of resting in one of Islam’s holiest sites.
Mr. Skones extended his condolences to the bereaved family and assured the public that the Hajj Task Force is committed to supporting the health and well-being of all Ghanaian pilgrims throughout the pilgrimage.
He noted that the Task Force had implemented various support measures, including medical assistance and physical fitness checks, to reduce health risks for the pilgrims during their spiritual journey.
