The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has moved swiftly to dispel circulating social media rumours alleging that thousands of Nigerian nationals are being issued Ghanaian passports.
In a firm rebuttal, the sector Minister, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, described the allegations as a deliberate misinformation campaign aimed at eroding public trust in Ghana’s passport issuance processes.
Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that the country’s passport system is protected by a robust verification framework that ensures only bona fide Ghanaian citizens can obtain travel documents. “The passport application process is stringent and citizenship-based,” he said. “All applicants are subjected to multiple layers of scrutiny, including documentation review, interviews, and background checks.”
He reiterated that passport vetting officers are trained to verify the nationality of every applicant, ensuring only qualified citizens are issued with Ghanaian passports.
To bolster transparency, the Ministry has extended an open invitation to the public and relevant stakeholders to witness the passport issuance procedures at its headquarters. This, the Minister noted, is intended to demystify the process and counter false narratives.
The Ministry also issued a strong warning against the circulation of unverified claims, cautioning that such misinformation not only threatens national security but also undermines the credibility of public institutions.
“Ghanaians must be vigilant and resist attempts to manipulate public sentiment with baseless propaganda,” the statement concluded.
