Ghana’s Sanitation Failures Threaten National Development as Economic Losses Top $500 Million Annually

Ghana’s sanitation shortcomings are rapidly becoming a major development obstacle, with new data from the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs revealing that the country loses over $500 million every year due to ineffective sanitation systems. Experts warn that the economic toll is undermining productivity, straining public health facilities, and slowing progress toward national development goals.

The ministry’s latest assessment shows that despite years of investment and public campaigns, only 25% of households currently use improved, non-shared toilet facilities. This means that three out of four homes still lack access to private toilets—an issue that fuels disease outbreaks and raises healthcare costs.

Even more alarming is the persistence of open defecation. Nationally, 18% of Ghanaians continue to practise it, with the Upper East Region recording almost half of its population engaging in the practice.

According to the sector Minister, Ahmed Ibrahim, the sanitation crisis is no longer merely an environmental challenge but a threat to Ghana’s economic stability.

“Poor sanitation costs us lives, productivity, and money,” he stressed, pointing out that sickness-related absenteeism and premature deaths are major contributors to the country’s financial losses.

Ghana’s rapid urbanisation—one of the fastest on the continent—is compounding the crisis. Urban centres, especially Accra, have expanded by more than 60% over the past two decades, yet the infrastructure needed to support this growth has not kept pace. Sewerage systems remain limited, overburdened, or in some cases non-existent.

The minister emphasised that the country’s sanitation setbacks reflect deeper structural and social challenges: chronic underfunding, weak enforcement of bye-laws, and an entrenched perception that toilet construction is optional.

He argued that reversing the trend will require a shift from treating sanitation as a household afterthought to recognising it as a critical economic investment.

“Sanitation is not just about hygiene—it’s about economic growth,” he said, calling for stronger regulations, household-level responsibility, and leadership from traditional authorities to transform community behaviour.

As Ghana pushes toward its development targets, analysts say tackling sanitation must become a priority, as the current trajectory threatens to compromise both public health and economic progress.
