The Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) has taken steps to enhance telecommunications access in remote areas by engaging global tech giant Huawei Technologies at the 2026 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
Leading the GIFEC delegation, Administrator and CEO Mr. Tanko Rashid-Computer met with Li Junfeng, Vice President of Huawei and CEO of the company’s Global Public Sector Business Unit, to explore strategies for strengthening the Fund’s Rural Telephony Project.
The discussions centered on innovative solutions designed to expand digital connectivity to underserved and unserved communities across Ghana. Huawei showcased its latest rural telephony masts and network technologies aimed at improving both voice and data services in remote locations.
“The presentation gave us valuable insights into infrastructure solutions that can enhance network quality and coverage in rural areas,” Mr. Rashid-Computer said. He noted that upgrading the Rural Telephony Project remains a priority for GIFEC to ensure citizens in these communities have reliable access to communication services.
The proposed infrastructure improvements are expected to support the rollout of 3G and 4G services, creating opportunities for digital inclusion, access to information, and socio-economic development.
The engagement underscores GIFEC’s commitment to partnering with international technology providers to accelerate Ghana’s digital transformation agenda and bridge the digital divide nationwide.
By leveraging cutting-edge telecommunications solutions, GIFEC aims to deliver universal access to digital services, empowering rural populations and fostering greater socio-economic participation across the country.
