The Keta District Chapter of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has renewed its leadership and unveiled an ambitious four-year agenda aimed at strengthening teacher welfare and driving education sector reforms.
This came during the Seventh Quadrennial (54th) District Delegates Conference held on Friday, which brought together over 100 accredited delegates and observers from across the Keta Municipality and Anloga District under the theme: “The Ghana Education Service at 50: Achievements, Teacher Motivation, Challenges, and the Way Forward.”
With more than 2,700 registered members in the district, the conference served as a critical forum for reflection on the evolving role of teachers, the state of the education system, and strategic planning for the future.
In a fiercely contested election, Mr. Ferguson Mattah was re-elected as District Chairman, reaffirming the strong support for his leadership among union members. He will be supported by Mr. Benard Ahiegkpor as Vice Chairman and Mr. Benson Mensah as District Treasurer.
Other elected officials include Mr. Raphael Kwadzo Agbanavor (Basic Schools Representative), Mr. Robertson Kwagbedzi (Senior High/Technical Schools Representative), Mr. Apity Eric (Youth Coordinator), and Madam Pearl Attitsogbui (GNATLAS Coordinator). Madam Bridget Tettey and Mr. Wise Dotse were elected as Education Office representatives, with a TVET representative also elected.
In his acceptance remarks, Mr. Mattah pledged to build on the progress made in his previous term. “This renewed mandate is not just a vote of confidence but a call to deepen our commitment to teacher welfare, capacity building, and policy engagement. Together, we’ll ensure the teacher’s voice is heard louder and clearer in shaping education policy,” he affirmed.
A notable aspect of the conference was the adoption of a new four-year strategic plan spanning 2025 to 2029, outlining goals in professional development, union growth, and advocacy for improved working conditions. The gathering also saw the presentation and approval of audited financial statements covering May 2020 to May 2024, affirming the union’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Dominic Dzanado, Anloga District Director of Education, praised the dedication of teachers and urged them to continue setting high standards. “You are the foundation of national development. Your resilience and impact on future generations are unmatched,” he said.
As the conference ended, participants expressed a strong sense of unity and purpose, vowing to champion professionalism and resilience in addressing the challenges confronting the Ghanaian teacher.
With a fresh leadership team and strategic vision, GNAT Keta is positioning itself as a powerful force for change within the education sector—promising not just to react to challenges, but to shape the future of teaching in the district and beyond.
