GNFS Celebrates Leadership, Innovation and Legacy in Ashanti Region Awards Ceremony

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Ashanti Region has spotlighted the enduring legacy of leadership, innovation, and professionalism at a colourful ceremony in Kumasi, where retiring officers and exceptional personnel were recognised for their service to the nation.

More than just a farewell, the event served as a powerful tribute to decades of institutional growth and transformation driven by key figures within the Service. Retirees including Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Francis Darko-Kono and ACFO Gladys Denteh were celebrated for their significant impact in operational leadership and communications respectively.

A highlight of the evening was the remarkable recognition of Deputy Chief Fire Officer (DCFO) Henry Fatai Giwah, who emerged as the most decorated officer at the ceremony. Formerly the Ashanti Regional Fire Commander and now Director of ICT and Research at GNFS Headquarters in Accra, DCFO Giwah walked away with five awards. His contributions in championing technology integration, operational efficiency, and officer training were praised as game-changing for the Service’s modernization drive.

In an emotional moment, Ashanti Regional Fire Commander ACFO II Peter Tetteh commended both past and present officers for their dedication. He underscored the critical role of retired officers in mentoring the next generation, noting that their continued involvement enriches the institution’s evolving identity.

“The welfare of our retired heroes speaks volumes about the character of our Service,” he said. “We must honour their journey and uphold the standards they’ve set.”

ACFO II Tetteh also took the opportunity to remind the public about new regulatory measures under the national fire safety policy. He announced that going forward, no fire certificates would be issued or renewed unless the facility in question secured a valid fire insurance policy—part of broader efforts to boost safety compliance and public accountability.

In his acceptance speech, DCFO Giwah urged current officers to pursue deeper understanding of their roles beyond surface-level practices. “Every organisation has its philosophy,” he noted. “Learn the ‘why’ behind what we do. That’s how we evolve, reduce errors, and become better professionals.”

Reflecting on his tenure, he expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve, crediting his achievements to the collective strength and unity of GNFS officers across the country.

The event not only marked the end of an era for several officers but also reaffirmed the GNFS’s commitment to excellence, institutional integrity, and public safety in a rapidly changing operational landscape.
