The government has begun implementation of its flagship One Million Coders Programme with the distribution of 8,500 laptops to partner institutions across the country.
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mr Samuel Nartey George, presented 6,500 Lenovo laptops to Regional Managers of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC) and an additional 2,000 units to 12 universities in Accra to support the rollout.
He announced that the nationwide training programme will officially begin on May 1, 2026, operating through 130 learning centres and targeting the training of one million young people in digital skills.
To support implementation, 130 ICT professionals have been recruited to provide technical and administrative assistance across all centres.
Mr George explained that a pilot phase conducted in 2025 across Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani and Bolgatanga demonstrated early results, with 859 participants successfully completing training out of an initial selection pool drawn from about 90,000 applicants.
He said the selection process was developed in collaboration with academia, industry stakeholders and partner institutions to ensure transparency and fairness.
The Minister also acknowledged MTN Ghana for contributing $2 million towards the programme and encouraged other private sector organisations to support the initiative.
He added that the Ministry has signed agreements with various companies to facilitate employment opportunities for graduates of the programme, improving their competitiveness in the digital job market.
Launched by President John Dramani Mahama in April 2025, the One Million Coders Programme forms part of government’s broader digital transformation agenda aimed at equipping young Ghanaians with skills in coding, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, web development and data analysis.
Officials say the initiative is designed to strengthen digital innovation, expand employment opportunities and position Ghana as a competitive player in the global digital economy.
