The government is considering processing surplus eggs into powder and other value-added products as part of a long-term strategy to tackle recurring egg gluts that continue to cause major financial losses for poultry farmers across Ghana.
According to Kwesi Etu-Bonde, the initiative forms part of a proposed national poultry master plan designed to stabilise prices, extend product shelf life and reduce post-production losses within the poultry sector. He said converting excess eggs into powder could create new market opportunities while preventing farmers from being forced to sell at low prices during periods of oversupply.
He explained that government interventions to boost maize and soya production have helped reduce feed costs, encouraging more farmers to expand poultry production and contributing to the current surplus. To ease the pressure, the School Feeding Programme has also been directed by President John Dramani Mahama to purchase eggs from local producers as part of efforts to absorb excess supply while broader reforms are developed under the poultry master plan.
