Dominic Nitiwul, Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, has urged the current government to seriously listen to the voice of the Ghanaian people, cautioning that failure to do so could result in the party’s defeat in the next general elections.
Speaking in Parliament, Nitiwul referenced the 2024 election results as a clear message from voters to the previous administration, which was ignored, leading to its loss of power. He warned that the same fate could befall the current government if it does not act on public concerns.
Highlighting the influential role of the Finance Ministry, Nitiwul noted it has become a critical challenge for any government due to its significant power over economic decisions. He stressed the need to rein in this power to avoid it becoming a government’s undoing.
Addressing his colleagues, he said, “What the minority leader put forward, the Majority should take it in good faith. It is not an insult, it is not criticism, it is not an attack on the government; it is just facts.”
He also used a weather metaphor to describe the political climate, noting that the “clouds that are gathering” signal challenges ahead, but the appearance of a “huge rainbow” could be a hopeful sign.
The comments come in the wake of Parliament’s controversial approval of a fuel levy, which charges GHC 1 on every liter of fuel sold to help offset the mounting debt in the energy sector — a move that has sparked public debate over its economic impact.
Nitiwul’s message serves as a reminder to the government to balance fiscal policy with public sentiment to maintain political stability and trust.
