Hunger Project Champions Home Gardens and Nutrition Education in Kwahu East to Boost Food Security

In commemoration of this year’s World Hunger Day, The Hunger Project (THP)-Ghana has called on communities in the Kwahu East District to adopt home and school gardening as a grassroots solution to food insecurity.

At a community event held in Nteso under the global theme “Sowing Resilience,” THP-Ghana emphasized the importance of sustainable and localized food production, especially in the face of economic uncertainty and supply chain challenges.

Mr. Solomon Amoakwa, Project Officer at the Ankoma Epicenter, explained that encouraging households and schools to grow their own fruits and vegetables would reduce dependence on distant farmlands and prevent food waste—especially with perishable produce that often spoils due to lack of storage facilities.

“Having food close at hand reduces the burden of transportation and helps families manage their diets better,” he stated. “It also promotes daily harvesting and fresh consumption, which are healthier and more efficient.”

The Hunger Project also pledged to support the community with an agricultural processing machine to boost local farming productivity.

The event also spotlighted nutrition education, with Ms. Rose Obeng, Nutrition Officer for Kwahu East, stressing that simply having food is not enough—what matters is its nutritional value. She advocated for balanced meals using the four-star diet model: staples, legumes/seeds, fruits and vegetables, and animal-source foods.

As part of its wider outreach, THP-Ghana also marked World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025 at the same event, using the platform to promote menstrual health awareness. Girl Child Coordinator Madam Constance Asomang urged young girls to speak up about menstrual issues and called for improved support systems in schools and homes to boost confidence and health outcomes.

The day concluded with a float by students from local schools, carrying placards that read: “Ending hunger is possible,” “Get involved,” and “Lack of vision breeds poverty.” The event reinforced the link between hunger, education, hygiene, and long-term community resilience.
