The Ghana Prisons Service has received a substantial donation of food items to support the feeding of inmates during the Ramadan season, thanks to a collaboration between the Minister for the Interior, Mr. Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, and philanthropist and businessman Mr. Ibrahim Mahama.
The donation, presented at the Prisons Headquarters, included 1,000 bags of rice, 417 boxes of sunflower cooking oil, 200 boxes of tomato paste, and 200 boxes of canned mackerel.
Mr. Muntaka explained that he reached out to Mr. Mahama to assist inmates during Ramadan, and the businessman promptly responded with the generous contribution. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with his broader commitment to improving conditions within the Prisons Service and making it a more efficient institution.
As part of further support, the Minister also announced plans to allocate 15 pick-up vehicles to the Prisons Service out of a total of 50 that would soon be distributed by the Interior Ministry.
The Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq.), expressed her appreciation for the Minister’s continuous efforts to enhance the welfare of the Service. She also used the occasion to advocate for the restoration of some operational allowances and the inclusion of all officers in the contagious allowance.
Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie also hinted at strategic reforms aimed at positioning the Prisons Service as a more effective institution aligned with the Minister’s vision. She assured him of the commitment of prison administration and staff to work diligently in achieving this goal.
The donated food items will be distributed across various prison facilities, including Nsawam Medium Security, Ankaful Complex, Koforidua Local, Tamale Central, Sunyani Central, Amanfrom Camp, and Manhyia Local Prisons.
This initiative highlights the growing efforts to improve the welfare of inmates and the operational efficiency of Ghana’s Prisons Service.
