A partnership between the Centre for Active Learning and Integrated Development (CALID) Ghana and the Embassy of Japan in Ghana has delivered a newly constructed six-unit classroom block to Nwodua R/C Basic School in the Kumbungu District, marking a significant boost to education infrastructure in the area.
The modern facility, funded through Japan’s grant assistance programme, is fully furnished and equipped with an ICT centre, a staff common room, a headteacher’s office, and sanitary facilities. The project cost approximately GH¢1,417,843.10, with CALID contributing an additional GH¢100,000 toward the purchase of five computers and sanitation improvements.
The Kumbungu District Assembly pledged to provide furniture, while the Ghana Education Service supported the initiative by posting qualified teachers to the school.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, CALID’s Executive Director, Mr. Mohammed Awal Sumani Bapio, said prior assessments showed pupils were learning in overcrowded classrooms with inadequate furniture, conditions that undermined both teaching and learning outcomes.
He emphasized that although teachers remained committed and pupils eager to learn, the infrastructure fell short of the standard required to deliver quality education—prompting CALID’s intervention.
Representing the Japanese Ambassador, Madam Yuze Haruko, Head of Political Affairs at the Embassy, reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting access to quality education in Ghana. She noted that the project aligns with Japan’s broader objective of creating safe and conducive learning environments for children.
Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Professor Hamza Adam, expressed gratitude to the Japanese government and development partners, highlighting the district’s infrastructural deficits. He stressed that improved educational facilities are critical to accelerating development in one of the country’s most deprived areas.
The District Chief Executive, Mr. Yakubu Imoro Kakpagu, who officially opened the building, urged the community and school authorities to maintain the facility properly to ensure its long-term impact.
Residents of Nwodua and surrounding communities welcomed the new classroom block with enthusiasm, describing it as a transformative step toward improving educational outcomes and fostering community development.
