A 36-year-old job seeker, Foster Nyarko, has been sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of stealing a mobile phone from an office at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) in Accra.
Nyarko, who appeared before the court, pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful entry and theft. The court, presided over by Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, convicted him on his own plea but initially deferred the sentencing. He was later sentenced to 13 months for unlawful entry and two years for stealing, with the sentences to run concurrently.
The case, prosecuted by Chief Inspector Daniel Ofori Appiah, revealed that Nyarko entered CHRAJ’s offices on October 23, 2024, under the pretense of following up on a job application. While inside, he accessed the office of Celis-Jane Nyadroh, a Principal Administrator, and stole her A54 5G mobile phone, valued at GHC4,999.
The theft was discovered the following day, prompting Nyadroh to file a complaint at the Ministries Police Station.
Nyarko, however, remained at large until January 30, 2025, when he attempted a similar act at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. This time, management apprehended him.
CCTV footage provided by CHRAJ confirmed Nyarko’s involvement in the earlier theft, leading to his arrest on January 31, 2025. He later admitted to stealing the phone and entering the administrator’s office unlawfully.
In court, Nyarko pleaded for leniency and promised not to repeat his actions, but the judge upheld the sentence, emphasizing the need for deterrence.
