Justice for Abesim: Court Delivers Life Sentence in Gruesome 2021 Child Murder Case

More than four years after a crime that stunned the nation, justice has finally been served in the tragic Abesim child murder case.

The High Court in Accra, presided over by Justice Ruby Aryeetey, has sentenced Richard Appiah to life imprisonment following his conviction for the murder of two teenage boys in Abesim near Sunyani in the Bono Region.

A seven-member jury unanimously found Appiah guilty on two counts of murder after a trial that spanned more than four years.

The victims, 12-year-old Louis Agyemang—Appiah’s stepbrother—and 15-year-old Stephen Sarpong, a neighbor, were killed in August 2021 in a case that deeply shook communities across Ghana.

The horrific discovery unfolded when police, acting on a tip-off about Louis’ disappearance, searched Appiah’s residence in Abesim. Officers found the bodies of the two boys, with some remains concealed in a refrigerator. Additional skeletal remains were later uncovered in a shallow grave on the property, alongside a double-edged sword investigators linked to the killings.

During the trial, the defense team argued that Appiah suffered from mental health challenges and entered an insanity plea. However, psychiatric evaluations and witness testimony presented by the prosecution convinced the jury that he was mentally sound at the time of the crimes and had acted deliberately.

In delivering the sentence, Justice Aryeetey described the murders as exceptionally cruel and acknowledged the lasting trauma inflicted on the victims’ families and the wider Abesim community. The life sentence imposed represents the maximum punishment currently enforceable under Ghana’s revised sentencing laws, which replaced the death penalty with life imprisonment.

The ruling closes one of the most disturbing criminal chapters in Ghana’s recent history, bringing a measure of justice to grieving families and a community that has waited years for accountability.
