The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital) has intensified efforts to strengthen research and innovation as part of a broader strategy to improve evidence-based healthcare delivery in Ghana’s second-largest referral facility.

The hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, announced that management has set aside GH¢100,000 annually to support operational research aimed at improving clinical outcomes and advancing tertiary healthcare.

He made the remarks at the hospital’s 2025 End-of-Year Performance Review Conference in Kumasi, themed: “KATH @70: Advancing Tertiary Health Care on the Pillars of Research, Customer-Centric Care and Clinical Mentorship.”

Dr. Baidoo said the initiative reflects the hospital’s commitment to strengthening research-driven and patient-centred care, supported by continuous staff development and institutional collaboration.

Despite operational challenges, including industrial actions by nurses, he said the hospital recorded notable improvements in service delivery and performance indicators.

He highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects, including the construction of an international catheterisation and cardiac centre, which is expected to expand advanced cardiac diagnostic and interventional services upon completion.

According to him, the facility will further position KATH as a leading specialist health institution in the country.

Dr. Baidoo also noted the rollout of clinical mentorship programmes in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service, aimed at strengthening capacity across regional health facilities and improving access to specialist care.

He added that staff participation in international medical conferences has been encouraged to expose practitioners to emerging medical innovations and best practices.

Other ongoing projects include the completion of an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Centre, construction of a Patients’ Relatives Hostel, and rehabilitation of internal roads and walkways to improve safety and service efficiency within the hospital environment.

On performance outcomes, Dr. Baidoo reported a 16% reduction in institutional deaths during the review period.

He also disclosed that emergency attendance rose to 26,581 cases, exceeding the annual target, while surgical procedures increased by 6% to 18,380 cases.

Outpatient attendance reached 284,225, surpassing projections, with marginal improvements also recorded in radiotherapy, laboratory, and physiotherapy services.

Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Professor David Asamoah, praised the long-standing partnership between KNUST and KATH, describing their joint research efforts as key to solving real healthcare challenges.

He stressed that research remains central to healthcare advancement and called for stronger integration of clinical excellence with empathy and patient engagement.

Prof. Asamoah further emphasised that the future of tertiary healthcare depends on sustained collaboration, innovation, and commitment to scientific research.
