A disturbing allegation of police misconduct has emerged from the Kintampo Municipality in the Bono East Region, where a local farmer, Mr. David Banchgla, is calling on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to intervene in what he describes as an abuse of power and obstruction of justice.
In an exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Banchgla recounted a harrowing incident that occurred two weeks ago. According to him, a group of individuals—one of whom was a police officer allegedly stationed at the Kintampo Police Station—stormed his residence demanding information about the whereabouts of a woman he claimed to know nothing about.
“When I told them I didn’t know her, they beat me severely, broke into my room, and took GH¢4,000 in cash,” Mr. Banchgla alleged. He said the ordeal left him traumatized and bewildered by what he sees as a clear violation of his rights.
What has deepened Mr. Banchgla’s frustration is the lack of progress on the case after he filed a formal complaint with the Kintampo Police. Shockingly, the same officer alleged to have been part of the attack is reportedly the one assigned to investigate the matter.
“How can someone who was part of the assault be expected to handle the investigation fairly?” he asked, expressing serious doubts about the transparency and integrity of the process so far.
He is now appealing directly to the Inspector General of Police to step in and ensure that an independent investigation is conducted to uncover the truth and bring those responsible to book.
Mr. Banchgla’s case highlights growing concerns among citizens about police accountability and the potential for abuse when alleged perpetrators are allowed to oversee their own investigations. His plea adds to the wider national discourse on police reform, civilian oversight, and the urgent need for justice systems that protect, rather than intimidate, the very citizens they serve.
As of now, the Ghana Police Service has not publicly responded to the allegations.
