In a bid to accelerate groundbreaking research and strengthen ties between academia and industry, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has launched the Innovation Moonshot Fund aimed at supporting high-risk, high-reward projects addressing critical challenges in Ghana and Africa.
The announcement was made by Akyamfuo Asafo Boakye Agyemang-Bonsu, Chairman of the University Council, during the opening of the inaugural TEK Alumni Homecoming 2025. He highlighted that while KNUST is already recognized globally for its quality innovations and research, strategic support from its alumni community could elevate the university from “excellence to eminence.”
“The Innovation Moonshot Fund will empower bold ideas that have the potential to transform society and create lasting impact,” said Agyemang-Bonsu.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson underscored the importance of alumni engagement in mentoring students and forging robust partnerships between academia and industry. She described KNUST alumni as “agents of change” whose continued collaboration is vital for enhancing student training, advancing research, and commercializing innovations.
Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Ben K. D. Asante, former CEO of Ghana National Gas Company, called for more structured, longer internship programs and stronger cooperation between universities and the corporate sector to ensure academic programs meet industry needs. He stressed the need for a shift in mindset where higher education is viewed not just as a status symbol but as a critical tool for developing expertise and practical problem-solving skills.
Dr. Asante also encouraged students to embrace diverse perspectives and cultivate professionalism in their interactions, essential for thriving in today’s dynamic work environment.
The event brought together KNUST alumni from across the globe, celebrating their achievements and calling for a renewed commitment to innovation and knowledge-sharing that can propel the university and the nation forward.
