The Mayor of Kumasi, Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has intensified the city’s sanitation enforcement drive with the arrest of a man accused of illegally dumping waste along the streets of Asafo.
The suspect, identified as Fuseini Agumah, is reported to be a branch organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He was picked up during a sanitation operation led by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) aimed at improving cleanliness in the metropolis.
According to the Mayor, the suspect had been collecting waste from residents for a fee but allegedly disposed of it indiscriminately on public streets instead of approved dumping sites.
The arrest was carried out by police officers accompanying the Mayor as part of an ongoing enforcement exercise targeting illegal waste disposal practices in the city.
Addressing a Social Accountability Forum organised by the KMA, the Mayor said the Assembly will not tolerate environmental misconduct, stressing that all offenders—regardless of political or social status—will face sanctions.
He explained that a substantial portion of the Assembly’s budget is allocated to sanitation and waste management, underscoring the financial burden illegal dumping places on city authorities.
The Mayor further appealed to residents to support ongoing efforts to keep Kumasi clean, noting that additional waste bins have been deployed across the metropolis to encourage proper disposal practices.
He reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to strict enforcement as part of broader measures to improve urban hygiene and public health in Kumasi.
