Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has disclosed that Inaki Williams had been playing through persistent pain and injuries before deciding to retire from international football after the 2026 World Cup.
Okraku said the GFA was disappointed by the Athletic Bilbao captain’s decision but ultimately understood the circumstances surrounding his departure from the Black Stars.
“I was disturbed about his decision. Not only me, but the entire Football Association. However, when you hear him out, you will understand his situation,” Okraku told Asempa FM.
According to the GFA president, Williams had been managing physical problems both with the national team and at club level.
“He has been playing through a lot of pain and injuries, and even at club level, he is being managed,” Okraku said.
He added that Williams’ family had engaged the GFA before the decision was finalised, allowing the association to better understand the circumstances behind the retirement.
“His parents spoke to me and the Football Association and we just have to appreciate what he has done for us as a country,” Okraku said.
The GFA president also urged the public to focus on Williams’ contribution to the national team rather than solely assessing his international career through statistics.
“I have seen people quoting his numbers but what we have to do is that we have to appreciate his effort,” he said.
Williams switched his international allegiance to Ghana in July 2022 after previously making one senior appearance for Spain.
His decision to end his Black Stars career follows Ghana’s participation in the 2026 World Cup in North America.
