The Marathon Foundation Ghana is ramping up efforts to position the Kwahu Mountain Marathon as a premier long-distance race, introducing enhanced incentives aimed at attracting elite runners and increasing participation.
Ahead of the 2026 edition scheduled for April 4, organisers have significantly upgraded the prize structure, with winners in both men’s and women’s elite categories set to receive GHS 7,000. Cash rewards will also be extended to runners finishing up to 20th place, marking a major shift toward inclusivity and broader recognition.
According to organisers, the revised package—considered one of the most competitive in Ghana’s road racing scene—includes not only cash prizes but also products from sponsors for top-performing athletes. The move is expected to motivate both seasoned and emerging runners to compete at a higher level.
The event will feature two race categories: a 21-kilometre race for professional athletes and a 5-kilometre run tailored for corporate organisations, encouraging wider community and business participation.
Held as part of the annual Kwahu Easter celebrations under the auspices of the Kwahu Traditional Council, the marathon continues to grow in prominence, drawing both local and international competitors.
Organisers say the expanded rewards reflect the marathon’s rising status and their commitment to developing long-distance running in Ghana by creating more opportunities for athletes.
With registration still open, the foundation is also inviting corporate partners and sponsors to support what is increasingly becoming a flagship sporting event on Ghana’s calendar.
