Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has expressed confidence in Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi, following an impressive first appearance for the Championship club.
The 20-year-old made an immediate impact during Coventry’s pre-season friendly against French side AS Monaco, providing an assist as the English club secured a 2-0 victory.
Yirenkyi’s promising debut has strengthened Lampard’s belief that the Ghana international can develop into an important player for Coventry in the coming seasons.
The midfielder joined Coventry from Danish side FC Nordsjaelland in a reported club-record transfer worth $30 million, following his impressive performances for Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Lampard revealed that Coventry faced competition from several clubs for Yirenkyi’s signature but succeeded in convincing the youngster to join their project.
“We’ve got a belief in Caleb here. He’s a player that we’re happy to have brought to the club because he was well wanted by many clubs probably around Europe. We sold the project to him,” Lampard told Coventry City media.
The former Chelsea manager also highlighted Yirenkyi’s age and potential, stressing that the club sees the Ghanaian as a player capable of developing significantly during his time at Coventry.
“He’s a good talented player, he’s young. This boy, we believe is going to really build his career so [he’s] a big addition to the club,” Lampard said.
The Coventry boss added that Yirenkyi’s debut had already provided glimpses of what he could offer the team, while expressing his expectation that the midfielder will continue to improve.
“I think we saw signs of that, hopefully we see a lot more,” he added.
Yirenkyi’s early contribution will provide a positive start to his Coventry career as he looks to establish himself in the squad and justify the significant investment made in securing his services.
For Lampard and Coventry, the midfielder’s development is likely to be closely watched as the club prepares for the new campaign.
