The Netherlands and Japan played out an entertaining 2–2 draw in their opening Group F match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with both sides sharing the points after a dramatic second-half contest at the Dallas Stadium on June 14.
After a cautious and tactical first half in which Japan’s disciplined defensive structure limited the Dutch attack, the match burst into life following the restart with four goals scored in an intense 45-minute spell.
The Netherlands eventually broke the deadlock six minutes into the second half when captain Virgil van Dijk powered a header past the goalkeeper from a well-delivered cross by Ryan Gravenberch, putting the Europeans in control.
Japan responded quickly, equalising in the 57th minute through Keito Nakamura, who found space inside the box before striking a deflected low shot beyond Bart Verbruggen.
The Dutch regained the lead shortly after when Crysencio Summerville produced a moment of quality, curling a long-range effort off the post and into the net to restore their advantage.
However, Japan showed resilience and refused to be subdued, continuing to press forward in search of a response. Their persistence was rewarded in the 88th minute when Daichi Kamada finished from close range after connecting with a corner delivered by Koki Ogawa.
The late equaliser ensured both teams opened their Group F campaign with a point apiece, keeping their hopes of progression to the knockout stages firmly alive.
The Netherlands impressed with their attacking creativity and aerial strength, while Japan earned praise for their organisation, discipline and refusal to back down despite falling behind twice.
Attention now turns to the next fixtures, with the Netherlands set to face Sweden in Houston, while Japan will meet Tunisia in Monterrey in what promises to be another crucial round of Group F matches.
