The fifth edition of the Local Business Community Fair, organized by the Abokobi Business Advisory Centre in collaboration with the Ga East Municipal Assembly and the Ghana Enterprise Agency (GEA), opened this week, spotlighting the innovation and resilience of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the municipality.
Running for four days from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, the Fair features about 20 exhibitors showcasing locally processed foods, cosmetics, detergents, herbal products, clothing, handcrafted accessories, household items, and fruit juices. The event provides a vital platform for local businesses to expand their market reach, strengthen competitiveness, and foster entrepreneurship.
Speaking at the opening, Madam Elikplim Akrugu, Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, emphasized the pivotal role of MSMEs in national development and job creation. She noted that despite being the backbone of the economy, many entrepreneurs face challenges in accessing finance, technology, and market opportunities.
“The Fair is more than a marketplace; it is a space for collaboration, strategy, and innovation. It ensures that every entrepreneur, whether formal or informal, has equal access to opportunities that drive growth, productivity, and sustainable livelihoods,” she said, commending exhibitors for the quality of their products.
Municipal Chief Executive Mr Edmund Agboh highlighted the importance of empowering local businesses through inclusive policies, financial support, capacity building, and digital tools. He described MSMEs as “the lifeline of community development and the biggest contributors to employment.”
Ms Madi Anthea Ohene Mayne, Greater Accra Regional Manager of GEA, stressed the need for strengthened enterprise support to tackle challenges like limited funding, regulatory pressures, and insufficient market information. Similarly, Mrs Vida Anyan McCarthy, Head of Abokobi BAC, called for increased investment in capacity building and business development services.
Business consultant Charles Kusi Appiah Kubi urged for more structured support and mentorship systems, noting that many MSMEs have clear goals but lack the technical guidance to scale effectively.
This year’s Fair, themed “Sustaining Local Businesses for Market Inclusivity and Growth,” underscores the municipality’s commitment to nurturing local enterprises and creating inclusive economic opportunities for all.
