A harrowing case of child sexual abuse in Madina has sparked national outrage, with calls mounting for a coordinated justice and protection response after it emerged that a 14-year-old girl was allegedly defiled by 18 men over a period of time.
The Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu, brought the matter to national attention on the floor of Parliament on Monday, urging swift and uncompromising action from law enforcement, the judiciary, and child welfare agencies.
“This is not only a crime—it is a moral failing of our society and institutions,” Sosu declared, revealing that the girl was discovered to be pregnant by her parents, leading to the revelation of the repeated abuse.
According to Sosu, information from the Madina Division of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) confirms the victim’s age and residence. Police have arrested two suspects who are currently in custody assisting with investigations, while efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the remaining perpetrators.
The MP vowed to ensure full justice for the survivor and called for a broader investigation into potential systemic negligence that allowed the abuse to persist undetected.
“This is a matter of defilement under Ghanaian law and must be treated with the seriousness it deserves. I will follow this case until all 18 suspects are brought to book,” Sosu stated firmly.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the vulnerability of children, particularly girls, in urban communities where sexual violence often goes unreported or inadequately investigated.
Child rights advocates say the case underscores the urgent need to strengthen Ghana’s child protection systems, expand support for survivors, and improve community surveillance mechanisms.
Meanwhile, civil society groups are urging DOVVSU and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to provide psychosocial care for the victim, and to launch public education campaigns on preventing child sexual exploitation.
“This must not be treated as an isolated case,” one advocate said. “It is part of a wider crisis of child abuse that requires both urgent justice and long-term policy reform.”
The police have assured the public of their commitment to a thorough investigation, and the MP has pledged to use his office to support both legal redress and rehabilitation for the survivor.
