In response to recurring floods devastating communities across Ghana, President John Dramani Mahama has launched a special Anti-Flood Taskforce to implement both emergency and long-term mitigation measures.
The task force, led by Deputy Chief of Staff in Charge of Operations, Stanislav Xoese Dogbe, with Legal Counsel to the President, Marietta Brew, as Secretary, has already commenced work by conducting aerial surveys of flood-prone areas. Key locations assessed include Weija, the Sakumo Ramsar site, and the Tema Fishing Harbour, where extensive flooding has disrupted livelihoods.
Speaking on the government’s strategy, Stan Dogbe emphasized that stringent measures will be enforced to address the crisis. As an immediate response, the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces has been deployed to begin desilting major drains in collaboration with local government authorities.
Beyond the capital, Local Government Minister Ahmed Ibrahim assured that the assessment and intervention efforts would be extended to other regions, ensuring a nationwide approach to flood management.
The Anti-Flood Taskforce will not only spearhead emergency response efforts but will also develop comprehensive strategies to prevent future occurrences. The government’s decisive action signals a commitment to tackling Ghana’s perennial flooding challenges with both urgency and long-term planning.
