President John Dramani Mahama has vowed to overhaul Ghana’s scholarship system to eliminate corruption and ensure that opportunities reach the most deserving youth.
Speaking during his 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, President Mahama condemned the longstanding practice where influential and wealthy individuals manipulate the system to secure scholarships meant for financially disadvantaged students.
“The administration of scholarships has been fraught with challenges. The poor, who genuinely need these opportunities, are often unable to access them because the rich and wealthy crowd them out,” he stated.
To address this, Mahama announced that his administration would introduce transparency measures, including publishing the names of scholarship beneficiaries annually. This, he said, would allow public scrutiny and accountability, ensuring that the system operates fairly and efficiently.
“As part of our government’s policy of transparency, equity, and sustainability, we will streamline the award process to ensure that only deserving youth benefit,” he assured.
The president’s announcement signals a firm commitment to tackling systemic inequalities in Ghana’s scholarship programs and restoring trust in the process.
