President John Dramani Mahama has vowed to complete the long-abandoned Krofrom Market in Kumasi by the end of 2026, offering hope to local traders after nearly two decades of delay and deterioration.
Speaking during a stop on his Thank-You Tour of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, July 16, the President toured the project site, which has become notorious as a den for criminals and reptiles due to years of neglect.
The project, first initiated in 2007, was envisioned as a modern commercial hub for the area. However, successive governments have failed to bring it to completion, frustrating traders and residents alike.
President Mahama said the Krofrom Market will now be prioritized under the NDC’s Market Enhancement Programme, an initiative that aims to modernise 18 key markets nationwide. He disclosed that he had directed the Kumasi Mayor to liaise with the Vice President to formally include Krofrom in the programme’s rollout.
“We’re picking 18 markets in Ghana to upgrade under the Market Enhancement Programme. I’ve asked the Mayor to ensure Krofrom is included so that by end of 2026, it will be fully completed,” Mahama said.
Beyond Krofrom, the President emphasized the NDC’s broader plan to reinvigorate trading infrastructure to improve local economies, especially for women in the informal sector.
The Market Queen, Adwenehemaa Nana Sakina, welcomed the announcement with optimism, expressing confidence in Mahama’s resolve and pledging the loyalty of Kumasi’s market women.
“You are the only one we believe can truly complete what others have left behind,” she said, describing the President as a dependable ally of traders.
Mahama’s visit to the Ashanti Region, a traditional political stronghold of the opposition, forms part of his outreach to communities where stalled development projects have long been a source of discontent.
