President John Dramani Mahama has announced that African passport holders travelling to Ghana for business or tourism will no longer be required to pay visa fees when applying through the country’s newly launched e-visa system.
He said the policy, which takes immediate effect, is aimed at promoting regional integration, boosting tourism, and making Ghana more accessible to visitors across the continent.
Speaking at the official launch of the e-visa platform on Monday, May 25, President Mahama explained that applicants will now complete the entire visa process online without visiting embassies or consulates.
“Effective today, all holders of African passports travelling to Ghana for business or tourism will apply for visas via the new online e-visa platform, and they will pay no visa fee,” he stated.
According to him, the digital system allows applicants to upload documents, make secure payments where applicable, and receive travel authorisation directly via email or mobile devices.
He noted that the reform is part of broader efforts to modernise Ghana’s immigration system, improve efficiency, and position the country as a competitive destination for tourism, trade and investment.
“The electronic visa system… will allow travellers from all around the world to apply for visas online,” he added, describing the move as a key step in government’s digital transformation agenda.
