President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to deepen Ghana’s relations with Brazil following the re-election of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, highlighting opportunities for both countries to advance a common agenda for the Global South.
In a congratulatory message posted on Facebook, President Mahama expressed optimism that Lula’s renewed mandate would provide an opportunity to strengthen bilateral cooperation and promote shared development interests.
He linked the two countries’ partnership to the Accra Reset initiative, which seeks to advance the interests of developing countries and strengthen cooperation among nations of the Global South.
“Congratulations to President Luiz Lula da Silva on your well-deserved re-election as President of Brazil. Brazil and Ghana share a rich history, and I look forward to further strengthening our bilateral relations,” Mahama said.
“Together, through the Accra Reset initiative, we will continue championing the Global South agenda for the betterment of our peoples,” he added.
Mahama’s message underscores his administration’s interest in strengthening Ghana’s engagement with Brazil and working with like-minded countries to advance the priorities of developing nations.
Lula secured another presidential term after defeating his challenger, Flávio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party, in Brazil’s presidential runoff election held on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
Official results announced by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court showed Lula winning 51.79 per cent of valid votes, equivalent to 64,256,232 votes, against Bolsonaro’s 48.21 per cent, representing 59,826,041 votes.
The victory extends the political career of the 80-year-old leader, who returned to the Brazilian presidency in 2023 after previously serving from 2003 to 2010.
For Ghana, Mahama’s message signals an interest in building on the countries’ historical ties and strengthening cooperation with Brazil as part of broader efforts to amplify the voice and interests of the Global South.
