Trading activities at Makola No. 2 Market were brought to a standstill on Thursday as shop owners shut their stores in protest against what they describe as steep and exploitative rent conditions.
The traders, who have operated in the facility for over three decades, say the newly imposed 20 percent charge — on property reportedly owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) — is placing unbearable financial pressure on their businesses.
The demonstration, which began in the early hours of February 26, disrupted commerce in one of Accra’s busiest trading centres, as affected traders demanded urgent intervention from authorities.
Speaking to Citi News, several traders expressed frustration over what they say are sudden and unjustified increases. One trader revealed that after paying GH₵25,000 in rent for the entire year in 2025, her new bill reflects an additional GH₵11,000, bringing the total to GH₵36,000 — without any renovation or visible improvements to the facility.
According to the traders, the revised charges threaten the sustainability of their operations and could force many of them out of business if not reviewed.
They are calling on relevant authorities to intervene and reassess the rent structure to safeguard livelihoods and restore normal trading activities at the market.
