A 30-year-old unemployed man, Akwasi Poku, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison by the Asante Akropong District Court for indecently assaulting a four-year-old girl at Hiawu-Besease in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District.
The conviction came after Poku admitted to the offence in court, presided over by Mr. Emmanuel Wiafe Adu. Prosecutor Chief Inspector Evans Ayimbisa explained that the incident occurred on October 25, when the child was under the care of her grandmother while her mother attended a funeral.
According to the prosecution, Poku, who lived in the same compound and was known to the child, took advantage of the situation. His inappropriate actions caused the victim physical harm, prompting her to alert her grandmother shortly after the encounter.
The grandmother, upon noticing the child’s discomfort and injury, informed the mother, leading to a formal complaint at the Abuakwa Police Station. The police arrested Poku, and he later confessed to the offence in his caution statement.
Following investigations, he was charged with indecent assault and subsequently convicted. The court’s ruling has been welcomed by residents concerned about child safety in the community.
