A 27-year-old man has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to stealing musical equipment from a church in Hohoe in the Volta Region.
Mohammed Rafiu was convicted by the Hohoe Circuit Court on charges of unlawful entry and stealing following an incident at Faith International Ministry Church.
The court sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment for unlawful entry and four years for stealing. The sentences are to run concurrently, meaning he will serve a maximum of four years in prison.
Rafiu’s arrest followed the vigilance of members of the public who became suspicious of his movements on June 5, 2026.
According to information from the Volta North Regional Police Command, the convict was seen near the church carrying a sack and attempting to board a commercial vehicle in haste.
His behaviour attracted the attention of nearby witnesses, who intercepted him and inspected the contents of the sack.
The search revealed several items belonging to the church, including an amplifier, an equalizer and a mixer machine.
The suspect was subsequently arrested and handed over to the Hohoe Police District for further investigations.
During police interrogation, Rafiu admitted to the offences, leading to his prosecution before the Hohoe Circuit Court.
Appearing before the court on June 8, he pleaded guilty to both charges and was convicted on his own plea.
The conviction has been welcomed by residents, who praised the vigilance of community members whose intervention helped recover the stolen items and led to the arrest of the suspect.
Police have meanwhile encouraged the public to continue supporting crime prevention efforts by promptly reporting suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities.
