A 30-year-old mason, Daniel Odai Affotey, has been remanded by an Accra Circuit Court for his alleged involvement in a major burglary and theft in the Spintex area of Accra.
Affotey faces multiple charges, including unlawful entry, conspiracy to commit a crime, stealing, and causing unlawful damage. He pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him before Mr. Joseph Yennuban Kunsong, the presiding judge, who denied bail due to concerns that he could interfere with ongoing investigations. Affotey is scheduled to reappear in court on April 1, 2026.
According to the prosecution, Affotey allegedly collaborated with an accomplice, Kwame Ewonam, who is currently at large, to target high-value residential properties. The incident in question occurred on March 4, 2026, when a banker residing in Spintex returned home to find her doors damaged, rooms ransacked, and valuables missing.
Investigations, supported by CCTV footage, reportedly showed Affotey and Ewonam carrying out the burglary using a Toyota Rush vehicle (registration GX 1219-18). Affotey was arrested on March 11, 2026, at Labone Cels Bridge Pub and Restaurant, and the vehicle was recovered.
A search of his residence uncovered numerous items allegedly stolen from various homes, including laptops, 11 television sets, 53 mobile phones, jewellery, clothing, home appliances, and other personal effects. Some items, such as jewellery, perfumes, gold watches, and external drives, were later identified by the complainant as hers.
The prosecution also revealed that Affotey admitted to planning and executing the thefts with Ewonam, conducting surveillance on targeted individuals, and using rented vehicles to facilitate the burglaries. During the March 4 incident, they allegedly stole cash amounting to $22,350, £1,000, GH¢1,000, and other valuables.
Authorities continue to investigate and are appealing for information that could lead to the arrest of Ewonam and recovery of remaining stolen items.
