Argentina captain Lionel Messi has raised fresh concerns ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after asking to be substituted during Inter Miami’s MLS clash against Philadelphia Union on Sunday.
The 38-year-old forward appeared to feel discomfort in his left hamstring during the second half before signalling to come off in the 73rd minute. Although he briefly looked uneasy, Messi was later seen walking normally as he headed down the tunnel.
Inter Miami head coach Guillermo Hoyos downplayed fears of a serious injury, suggesting the substitution was mainly a precautionary measure due to the demanding playing conditions.
“As far as I know, we don’t have a medical report yet, but he was fatigued,” Hoyos said.
“The pitch was heavy, and when in doubt, you don’t take risks.”
The coach’s explanation indicates that the decision was largely preventive, although the club is yet to issue an official medical update on the Argentine star.
Messi, who captained Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, has not confirmed whether he will feature at the 2026 tournament, though he is widely expected to make a record-equalling sixth appearance.
Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has had his workload carefully managed due to recurring fitness concerns.
Attention now turns to his recovery, with both Argentina and Inter Miami hopeful the latest scare will not affect his World Cup preparations.
