Ghana’s mobile money ecosystem recorded more than one billion transactions in August 2026, as the value and frequency of digital payments continued to expand across the country.
Data from the Bank of Ghana’s September 2026 Summary of Economic and Financial Data show that 1.046 billion mobile money transactions were recorded during the month, up from 969 million transactions in July.
The increased transaction activity was accompanied by a sharp rise in the total value of funds moved through mobile money platforms.
Transactions were valued at GH¢518.8 billion in August, compared with GH¢509.4 billion in July.
On a year-on-year basis, the value of mobile money transactions increased by about 46.5 per cent from GH¢354.1 billion recorded in August 2025.
The expansion comes as more Ghanaians continue to use mobile money accounts for payments, transfers and other financial transactions.
As of August 2026, the country had 85.8 million registered mobile money accounts, although the number of active accounts was significantly lower at 26.4 million.
The Bank of Ghana defines an active mobile money account as one that has recorded at least one transaction within the preceding 90 days.
The mobile money agent network also expanded during the month, providing customers with wider access to cash-in, cash-out and other mobile financial services.
Active mobile money agents increased from 550,000 in July to 594,000 in August.
According to the central bank, an active agent is one who has conducted at least one transaction within the previous 30 days.
Meanwhile, the balance of mobile money float increased marginally to GH¢39.8 billion in August from GH¢39 billion in July.
The latest figures point to the increasing scale of mobile money as a major channel for financial transactions in Ghana, with both transaction volumes and values maintaining an upward trajectory.
The continued expansion of the agent network also indicates growing demand for mobile financial services, particularly for customers who rely on agents to access digital financial services.
The August performance further highlights the growing role of digital payment platforms in facilitating transactions between individuals and businesses and supporting everyday economic activity.
With more than one billion transactions recorded in a single month, mobile money remains a significant component of Ghana’s evolving digital financial ecosystem.
