MoFA Targets School Farms in Push for Food Self-Sufficiency

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has intensified efforts to promote food self-sufficiency by supplying 25,000 bags of fertiliser to 413 schools across the country under the Feed Ghana Programme.

The initiative, which prioritises school-based farming, is designed to strengthen agricultural education and empower young people to actively participate in food production. It also supports the government’s broader Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda, which seeks to improve national food and nutrition security.

According to a statement issued in Accra, the fertiliser distribution is targeted at sustaining minor season crop production and ensuring that school farms remain productive throughout the year.

The Ministry said the Deputy Feed Ghana Coordinator in charge of Institutional Farming, Mr. Gordon Nana Asubonteng, has been tasked to supervise and expedite the distribution exercise to guarantee that schools receive the fertiliser in time for application.

“The goal is to maximise yields and ensure that the farming efforts of our educational institutions contribute meaningfully to local food production,” the statement noted.

MoFA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting school farms with not only fertiliser but also technical assistance, mechanisation services, and improved seeds. The Ministry views school farming as a practical model for teaching agriculture, fostering entrepreneurship, and helping reduce food costs in boarding institutions.

The Feed Ghana Programme, a major pillar of government’s agricultural development strategy, encourages schools, security agencies, and public institutions to establish and maintain farms as part of efforts to reduce import dependency and strengthen local food systems.

Officials say beyond improving food supply, the initiative is also expected to revive interest in agriculture among young people and demonstrate that farming can be both educational and economically viable.

MoFA described the school farm component as “a vital investment in the country’s future farmers,” stressing that promoting agriculture at the grassroots level remains key to building a sustainable food-secure economy.
