Walid Regragui has stepped down as head coach of the Morocco national football team following the Atlas Lions’ loss in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final on home soil. His resignation comes just months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leaving the team in a crucial transitional period.
Sources indicate that Mohamed Ouahbi is the leading candidate to replace Regragui, with an official announcement expected from the Moroccan Football Federation later tonight.
Morocco now faces the challenge of finalizing preparations for a demanding World Cup group that includes Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti. Regragui, 48, had led Morocco through one of its most successful eras, highlighted by a semi-final finish at the 2022 World Cup and the 2025 AFCON final appearance.
The federation’s swift appointment of a new coach will be vital to ensure Morocco’s readiness for the global tournament.
