Despite the New Patriotic Party’s initial boycott, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie has announced she will contest the July 11 parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North. Her decision follows a court dismissal of her attempt to halt the rerun—ordered after disputed results in 19 polling stations from the December 2024 election.
At her Odorkor office on July 10, Afriyie expressed gratitude for her supporters’ resilience over the past seven months and asserted confidence in securing victory. “I won on December 7, and I’m ready for tomorrow’s contest,” she said, signaling a clear break from her party’s stance.
Justice Ali Baba Abature ruled on July 9 that stopping the rerun would infringe the EC’s constitutional duty and deny constituents representation, underscoring the legal imperative for the exercise. The EC has maintained that the rerun is confined to the 19 polling stations cited in its directive.
Afriyie’s move adds a new twist to the Ablekuma North saga, pitting her individual resolve against the NPP’s broader legal and political strategy.
