The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Ashanti Region has called on schoolchildren to become ambassadors for environmental conservation as part of efforts to promote responsible citizenship and combat climate change.
The appeal was made during an environmental education programme held for pupils of the Ever Learning Development Centre to mark World Environment Month under the theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”
Addressing the pupils, the Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of the NCCE, Madam Akua Zakaria, said protecting the environment was a shared responsibility that required the active participation of every citizen, regardless of age.
She encouraged the pupils to adopt environmentally friendly practices such as proper waste disposal, tree planting, water conservation and maintaining clean surroundings while discouraging activities that contribute to environmental degradation.
Mr. Evans Nunoo, Deputy Director of the Commission, explained that the 2026 World Environment Day theme underscored the importance of nature-based solutions in addressing climate change and safeguarding the future.
He urged the pupils to promote positive environmental practices within their homes and communities by helping to protect forests, water bodies and biodiversity.
The Commission also reminded participants that Article 41(k) of the 1992 Constitution places a civic duty on every Ghanaian to protect and preserve the environment, making environmental stewardship a constitutional obligation.
Pupils were encouraged to support efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal, water pollution, deforestation and other harmful environmental practices that threaten sustainable development.
The session further highlighted the link between environmental conservation and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those relating to health, clean water and sanitation, sustainable cities, responsible consumption, climate action and the protection of ecosystems.
The outreach forms part of a month-long campaign being undertaken by NCCE district offices across the Ashanti Region to deepen public awareness of environmental protection and inspire greater civic participation in safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources.
