The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken steps to preserve the legacy of its founder, Jerry John Rawlings, by renaming its national headquarters after him and unveiling a memorial bust in his honour.
The symbolic gestures formed part of activities commemorating what would have been the late statesman’s 79th birthday and underscored the party’s commitment to keeping alive the ideals and principles he championed throughout his political career.
The ceremony, held on June 22, 2026, brought together senior party officials, supporters and dignitaries under the theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy.”
Party leaders described the renaming of the headquarters as a tribute to Rawlings’ pivotal role in the formation of the NDC and his influence on Ghana’s democratic development.
The event began with the official dedication of the party’s headquarters in Rawlings’ name, followed by the unveiling of a bust designed to serve as a lasting reminder of his contribution to the party and the nation.
Speakers at the ceremony reflected on the former President’s political journey, from his role in Ghana’s revolutionary era to his leadership during the country’s transition to constitutional democracy.
Rawlings is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Ghana’s modern political history, having first led the country as a military ruler before overseeing the establishment of the Fourth Republic and serving as its first president from 1993 to 2001.
The commemoration highlighted his role in shaping democratic governance and strengthening political institutions, achievements party officials said continue to inspire the NDC’s vision and direction.
President John Dramani Mahama was expected to join the event and deliver a tribute alongside other leading members of the party, reflecting on Rawlings’ enduring impact on Ghanaian politics and national development.
The activities formed part of a broader programme aimed at celebrating the life and achievements of the late leader, who passed away in November 2020.
Party executives noted that the renaming of the headquarters and installation of the bust were not only acts of remembrance but also efforts to institutionalise Rawlings’ legacy for future generations of party members.
They said the memorials would serve as enduring symbols of the values of patriotism, accountability, social justice and democratic governance that Rawlings advocated throughout his public life.
The NDC believes the initiative will help strengthen historical consciousness within the party while honouring the contributions of the man whose leadership played a central role in shaping both the party and Ghana’s contemporary democratic landscape.
