Mr. George Mawuli, Regional Manager of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in Ahafo, has raised alarms over the growing challenge of illegal co-payments by some healthcare providers, a practice threatening the National Health Insurance Scheme’s (NHIS) growth and member retention in the region.
Speaking at a recent stakeholder engagement in Hwidiem, Asutifi South District, Mr. Mawuli emphasized that these unlawful charges are discouraging both new registrations and renewals, as many insured members face unexpected out-of-pocket expenses despite their coverage.
“The persistence of illegal billing practices is eroding public trust and dampening enthusiasm for the NHIS,” he noted, urging all regional stakeholders—including healthcare providers, regulators, and community leaders—to collaborate closely in stamping out the malpractice.
The forum brought together NHIA staff from across the six administrative districts and municipalities in Ahafo, creating a platform to strategize on improving compliance and safeguarding members’ benefits.
Highlighting the NHIA’s commitment, Mr. Mawuli assured participants that the Authority is intensifying efforts to identify and sanction offenders, while calling on partners to support awareness campaigns and monitoring initiatives.
Dr. Akosua Agyeiwaa Owusu Sarpong, Ahafo Regional Health Director, underscored the critical need for coordinated action among all actors in the health sector to overcome emerging challenges and enhance health outcomes for the region’s population.
The joint resolve from stakeholders signals a proactive step toward restoring confidence in the NHIS and ensuring its sustainability as a cornerstone of accessible healthcare in Ahafo.
