Residents of the Ketu South Municipality are counting losses after more than nine hours of continuous rainfall on Monday triggered severe flooding that displaced families, damaged property and disrupted both education and economic activity.
The torrential rains submerged homes, farmlands and public infrastructure across several communities, leaving widespread destruction in their wake and cutting off access to affected areas.
At the Agbogbome Electoral Area, floodwaters entered school premises from Kindergarten to Primary Two, forcing teachers and community members to relocate pupils to safer locations to continue lessons.
The situation also made it impossible for pupils to safely travel to school, as rising waters blocked access routes, compelling parents and guardians to keep children at home pending further instructions from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Municipal Education Directorate.
Assembly Member for the area, Mr. Emmanuel Dorklu, said more than 15 households had been affected, with property including poultry farms destroyed by the floods. He also noted that some pupils lost their school materials after leaving them in classrooms.
Other parts of the municipality were equally affected, with the Viepe Electoral Area recording multiple flooded homes, while Agbozume South experienced some of the worst damage.
Assembly Member for Agbozume South, Mr. Godson Ahiamadzi, said at least 10 houses near the main market were severely impacted, adding that he personally lost seven goats to the disaster.
He expressed concern over the recurring flooding of the Agbozume market, describing it as one of the busiest commercial centres in the area but one that lacks adequate drainage infrastructure.
According to him, the absence of gutters and proper water channels means the entire market is regularly submerged whenever it rains, disrupting trading activities, especially for women traders.
Officials from NADMO have since visited the affected communities to assess the extent of damage and compile reports for possible intervention and relief support.
The Ghana News Agency also observed that areas such as Agavedzi and Salakope, previously affected by tidal wave displacement, were not spared by the latest flooding.
No casualties have been reported so far, while assessment and recovery efforts are ongoing across the municipality.
