Ningo-Prampram Ends 107-Year Chieftaincy Dispute in Historic Display of Unity

The people of Ningo-Prampram have brought to a close a 107-year-old chieftaincy dispute, resolving one of the country’s longest traditional conflicts through dialogue, law, and restraint.

The resolution was marked at the climax of this year’s Homowo Festival, where residents, traditional authorities, and dignitaries gathered to celebrate what many described as a “new dawn” for the coastal community.

Unlike many protracted disputes that have turned violent, the people of Ningo-Prampram distinguished themselves by upholding peace throughout the century-long process. Despite deep divisions over the stool, there were no reports of bloodshed or destruction, with the community allowing both the courts and traditional structures to guide the way to settlement.

The outcome was the installation of a new chief through consensus and cultural tradition, a move hailed as a turning point for unity and development in the area. “This is not just a victory for Ningo, but for Ghana,” one elder at the durbar remarked. “We have shown that patience, law, and tradition can deliver peace.”

The grand durbar attracted prominent dignitaries, including the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Communications Minister and Ningo-Prampram MP Samuel Narteh George, Ketu South MP Abla Dzifa Gomashie, and the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts. Their presence highlighted the national significance of the milestone.

Residents expressed optimism that the end of the dispute would open doors for development, as political leaders also pledged renewed investment in infrastructure, education, and livelihoods for the people of Ningo-Prampram.

With the conflict resolved, attention is now turning to reconciliation, economic opportunities, and leveraging the area’s cultural heritage for growth. Community members say the peaceful settlement is proof that even the deepest rifts can be healed without violence.

“This festival marks a new beginning,” a youth leader said. “For the first time in over a century, we can celebrate Homowo under one leadership, one community, and one destiny.”
