Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have delivered a clear verdict in the party’s presidential primary, electing former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer after a nationwide exercise that tested the party’s internal democracy.
Dr Bawumia swept to victory with 110,643 votes, equivalent to 56.48 percent of valid votes cast, signalling broad-based confidence in his leadership as the party prepares for the next general elections.
The closely watched contest saw a competitive field of five aspirants, with Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong finishing second after polling 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 percent.
Former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong, followed in third place with 36,303 votes, accounting for 18.53 percent.
Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, placed fourth with 1,999 votes (1.02 percent), while former General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, came fifth with 402 votes, representing 0.21 percent.
The primary attracted the participation of more than 211,000 delegates nationwide, who voted at 333 polling centres across all 275 constituencies, underscoring the scale and significance of the exercise.
Voting and counting were conducted under tight security and close supervision by party officials, with observers describing the process as orderly and transparent.
Only minor incidents were reported, none of which disrupted the overall conduct of the polls.
Early trends from constituency-level collation had already pointed to a commanding performance by Dr Bawumia, reflecting his strong grassroots appeal among party delegates.
In his victory remarks, Dr Bawumia expressed gratitude to delegates for the mandate and stressed the need for unity within the party.
He called on supporters of all aspirants to close ranks and work together towards securing victory for the NPP in the 2028 general elections.
Party leaders also praised the peaceful nature of the primary, describing it as a demonstration of the NPP’s commitment to internal democracy and cohesion ahead of the national contest.
