The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Oti Region has criticised the bail conditions imposed on the party’s Director of Communications, Mr. Dennis Miracles Aboagye, describing them as excessive and raising concerns about their implications for Ghana’s justice system.
The party’s Oti Regional Communications Director, Mr. Seidu Musah, said the GH¢50 million bail bond and requirement for three sureties, including two to be justified, appeared disproportionate and could create the perception that legal processes were being influenced by political considerations.
Mr. Aboagye was granted bail following his arrest, with the court imposing conditions that have since sparked debate among political actors and the public.
Speaking on the matter, Mr. Musah said the NPP remained committed to respecting the rule of law and the independence of the Judiciary but stressed that bail conditions should not become a form of punishment before an accused person has been tried and convicted.
He emphasised that every individual accused of an offence is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction and must be accorded fair treatment under the law.
Mr. Musah warned that if what he described as a trend of imposing stringent conditions on opposition figures continued, political actors could face similar situations under future administrations.
He suggested that such practices could set a precedent where members of any political party in opposition might struggle under difficult legal conditions.
The NPP communicator alleged that some recent developments involving opposition members reflected a possible misuse of state institutions, cautioning that such perceptions could weaken public trust in democratic institutions.
He called on authorities to ensure that justice was administered fairly, independently and without political interference, arguing that equal treatment before the law remained essential to Ghana’s democratic stability.
Mr. Musah also appealed to political parties and their supporters to avoid inflammatory statements and actions that could deepen political divisions.
He reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to democratic governance and expressed confidence that due process would guide the handling of Mr. Aboagye’s case.
The bail conditions imposed on the NPP communications executive continue to generate public discussion, with differing opinions on whether the requirements reflect the seriousness of the allegations or place an undue burden on an accused person awaiting trial.
